Welcome

Constable Stonework is a small masonry company using traditional craftsmanship as the foundation of our business. Only highly skilled and professionally qualified individuals are employed. We cover all aspects of masonry from restoration to new build.

Stone Carving

This Stone plaque was missing it's letters and numbers caused by nearly 150 years of weathering. Our job was to carefully remove the plaque, inspect the stone and hand carve new lettering in the same original style.

Lime mortar repointing & surface repairs

Before

Cement mortar traps moisture, unlike lime mortar which allows a wall to properly breath. Cracks in the chimney coping of this Edwardian house and failed pointing allowed water infiltration. Any moisture entering a wall escapes though the mortar joints. If hard cement mortars are used the moisture gets trapped in the wall causing the masonry to erode.

After

Extensive work was carried out on this project to repair this gable wall. All cement mortar was removed. The chimney coping and leadwork replaced, surface repairs applied to laminating stonework and the entire gable and chimney repointed using correct lime mortar.

Recently completed projects

Edwardian town house chimney restoration work, Crieff

Before

This Edwardian town house was in urgent need of replacement stone work and biological growth removal. We were contracted to restore this ornate chimney stack. Using a Doff system to remove the moss and algae we were able to see the areas worst affected from water infiltration and erosion.

After

A total of 13 replacement stones were cut at our workshop and fitted on site. Mortar repairs were applied to damaged masonry where replacement stones were not necessary. The entire chimney stack was repointed and haunching replaced.

Stone Cleaning using our Doff system

Before stone cleaning.

Clients from a recently completed chimney restoration project called us back to remove the biological growth from these bay windows.

After stone cleaning.

Analysing the condition of the masonry was the first approach to ensure the correct method was used. We decided a Doff system set at a gentle pressure to insure no damage was caused to the masonry would be the most suitable method to clean these Edwardian homes.

Ongoing projects

As Scotland has a large number of estates involving a great deal of stonework, a large part of our business is through ongoing restoration projects. One of our major clients are owners of the Monzie estate.
